SALLET AND BEVOR

1460–1500

Sallet (light helmet with a projection over the neck) and bevor (piece of armor protecting the lower part of the face) from the fifteenth century. These two pieces were worn together to protect the head, the neck and upper chest. Widely used in all Christian lands from the middle of the fifteenth century, they were only gradually replaced by the visored armet (which served both of their functions with a single piece) beginning in the sixteenth century. At top left, the sallet is shown from the side and at top right from the front. The middle set of images shows the bevor from the side and front. The drawings at the bottom of the page demonstrate how the objects would have been worn. In battle, the sallet was pulled down over the face, whereas at other times it was worn so that the face was exposed.
