CHAPTER 13

5.50 pm

THE SOUND OF GUNFIRE outside was making Ruth unbearably anxious. She had no idea what was going on or what had happened. Nick was out there – was he still alive? Had Hamzar gone out and shot the two MI5 agents dead? Were the MI5 agents armed? The pit of her stomach was tight and she felt like she was going to be sick.

Ruth shifted on her chair – the plastic zip ties were permanently digging into the skin on her wrists. She was coming to the slow realisation that the only way out of this would be getting help from outside. But no one knew they were in trouble. Had the MI5 agents managed to contact someone to tell them what had happened?

Glancing over at Sameer, she could see he was transfixed by the bank of CCTV monitors. He was jigging one of his legs, again and again, his moves quick and jittery. With every burst of gunfire, he flinched.

He leant down and hit a button on the keyboard. Outside fell silent. Ruth could only partially see one monitor from where she was sitting. What was going on? Was Nick dead? Had the MI5 agents stopped the attackers? She squinted to get a better angle; it was an overview of the whole front area of the house. The picture was hard to make out in the night vision, but she could see the slow progression of the gates, which were closing. The button Sameer clicked must have closed the gates. But why?

‘What’s going on?’ Ruth asked. ‘Why have you closed the gates?’

Sameer ignored her and rubbed his face and nose.

‘You don’t have to do this, Sameer. You know that?’ Ruth said in a gentle tone.

‘Shut up,’ Sameer growled.

Sameer looked over at her. Was there a way of getting to him before the others got back?

‘Sameer, you seem to be a reasonable and intelligent man. My guess is that you got involved in this because you thought it was a simple rescue mission. You would get here, break Abu Habib from his cell, and leave. But it’s not turning out like that, is it? It’s a mess and you’re in the middle of it,’ Ruth said, hoping she’d got the right measure of the man.

Sameer got up and glared at her. Ruth held her breath. Was he going to come over and hit her?

‘I know what you’re trying to do and I’m not interested in what someone like you has to say,’ Sameer said as he went back to staring at the monitors.

‘You’re running out of options, Sameer. Yasir has disappeared. The people who arrived were agents for MI5. If anything happens to them, or if they make contact with the outside, then you’ve got about half an hour before a unit of heavily armed officers scale the walls. And they won’t be arresting you. They will shoot you on sight,’ Ruth said.

Sameer snapped to his feet and came over. ‘I’ve already told you to shut up!’ he yelled in her face.
