THE FALLACY OF PURPLE

A decade ago, there was a lot of talk about “purple” states and communities—the idea of a middle ground where ideas from the left (blue) and the right (red) could be mixed into a less threatening middle ground (purple). For a time, “purple” gained momentum as a shiny new arena in politics where people could find common ground. While there are definitely swing states that alternatively go red or blue, they are not actually purple. Nor is the rise of self-defined Independents a purple indicator. Scratch the surface of an independent, and chances are you’ll find someone who almost always votes Republican or Democrat. They dispute the label, not the candidates. For example, according to Pew, 70 percent of Republican-leaning independents support Donald Trump, want a border wall, and hate the Democrats. And far from being moderates, which is another fallacy about independents, they’re rock-ribbed conservatives.

It’s doubtful that independents will gain momentum because studies also show that independents are far less politically engaged.
