THE THREE YEARS at Crozer slipped past quickly. Living in the North most of each year gave Martin a chance to know white people who were on his side. But Martin also discovered prejudice in the North. There were no “For White Only” signs, but some places still did not welcome black people, despite laws that said they must be served.

Martin graduated from Crozer at twenty-two. He was at the head of his class and gave the valedictory address. He also received other honors, among them the Lewis Crozer Fellowship award of $1,200. This money was to be applied to two more years of study at the school of his choice. Now Martin would be able to attain the highest degree in education: a doctorate.

Martin chose Boston University and rented a room in the city. He drove back and forth to school in the green Chevrolet his parents gave him as a graduation present.

It was in Boston that Martin met the lovely Coretta Scott, who was studying voice at the New England Conservatory of Music. Like Martin, she too was from the South and had also known the whiplash of prejudice. Before their first date was over, Martin was hinting about marriage, even though they each had a year more of schooling ahead of them.

As the months passed, Martin’s talk of marriage became more pressing. Coretta did not know what to do. She wanted to become a concert singer and had hoped not to marry until her career was safely launched.

Martin, however, convinced her otherwise, and they were married on June 18, 1953. The ceremony was performed by Martin’s father in the garden of Coretta’s home.
