Chapter Seven

On his way to the hardware store for his father, Tanner intended to stride by Bailey’s salon without giving it as much as a passing consideration. The sky was blue. A summer breeze ruffled the trees on the mountain behind the town, exposing the undersides of the leaves to the morning sun and causing them to glisten like a wall of diamonds. Through several miracles of overnight mail, the parts for his Mercedes had arrived at the garage that morning, so technically he was free to go. Once he honored his commitment to attend the meeting with Mrs. Smith’s board, he could be on his way. It was actually timely and appropriate that he told Bailey he was stepping out of her life.

Unfortunately, he just couldn’t forget that last kiss.

He didn’t even have to close his eyes to recall the softness of Bailey’s lips pressed against his or the sensation of their tongues twining intimately. But if he did close his eyes and take one long breath, all the physical responses inspired by her warm mouth seemed to spiral through him. He felt hot and weak simultaneously, but more than that, the state, both the physical sensations and his emotional reactions to them felt right.

When he examined all the events that had brought them together he could almost believe they were supposed to meet. Yet, he knew that wasn’t true. It couldn’t be. He had already inadvertently thrown her into a situation for which she wasn’t ready by introducing her to Mrs. Smith. If he were meant to be with her, his presence would enhance her life, not cause turmoil.

But he had caused turmoil. Lots of it. It hadn’t been his intention to push her. He had been so involved with helping her help the town that he didn’t even see he was doing it. But that was the problem. Just like he was so wrapped up in his own troubles that he didn’t see the effect of his choices on Emmalee, he had been so wrapped up in this revitalization committee and getting a stupid date that he didn’t realize he was pushing Bailey and threatening to destroy her dream. If that wasn’t proof positive that he was wrong for her, Tanner didn’t know what was.

No, he thought, and sighed heavily when he caught sight of Bailey’s blond hair as she walked to the cash register in front of her shop window, chatting with a customer. They were not meant to be together.

Bailey peeked out the window and saw Tanner walking away. With his eyes hooded and his lips turned down in a serious frown, he looked like a man with the weight of the world on his shoulders. Bailey stopped talking with Mrs. Alshouse. Her hand curled tightly around the $4.25 worth of change she should have been handing across the counter and then froze above the open cash register drawer.

All she had to do was look at Tanner to remember what it felt like to kiss him.
