The kingdom and the power of David Carr

By Tom McGeveran | 9:26 a.m. Jun. 17, 2011

The title on his resume would make David Carr seem like any other name at The New York Times: he’s a reporter, albeit a veteran and a popular one, for the newspaper’s business desk covering the media industry, and writes a weekly column for the section (called “The Media Equation”) too. He’s also had a couple of blogs over the years, including The Carpetbagger, which covers awards seasons and sometimes film festivals; he’s also nowadays one half of the duo behind the Times‘ popular online video report about culture (high and low) with critic A.O. Scott. But Times people have a way of making their names beyond those confines, and Carr is exemplar. A keen adapter of new technologies, Carr is among the paper’s most followed journalists on Twitter; he’s among the most requested for media and culture conference circuits; and he is the author of a rather stunning biography, called The Night of the Gun. During a period in which the Times seemed to be suffering one of its periodic bouts of bad press—the company had erected a paywall, and some of the financials weren’t looking so good—I noticed the way Carr leveraged his popularity as someone who seemed to belong more to his readers than to his bosses to mount an emotional, heartfelt response for the company. He was kind enough to talk to me about it.—Tom McGeveran
