SELLING YOUR JEWELLERY
Are you intending to sell your jewellery? If so, please note that some countries require you to register with the Assay Office (or equivalent) when selling precious metals, as is the case in the UK.
It is good practice to diversify price points by creating pieces that carry the same elements of design, flowers, hearts, stars, etc., in different sizes. Scale up too! Make a few larger statement pieces, which will be more pricey (display them prominently). You might sell fewer of them, but they are your desirable pieces and they will spark interest.
Highest perceived value possible: sign your pieces, include a small distinctive embellishment unique to you. Hidden words and messages only visible to the wearer are very appealing, as are collections tied to a good cause (generate good karma!). Use packaging that tells a story.
Allow âbreathingâ space when you display your jewellery. A common mistake is to âoverloadâ a table or cabinet with random jewellery pieces thrown together. This gives the impression of mass-produced, inexpensive jewellery. Instead, cultivate an image that celebrates craftsmanship, and carefully curates one-of-a-kind pieces (think art gallery rather than jumble sale).
Encourage collectability and develop desirability: create stacking elements, layered looks (combination sets of two or more elements), mix and match elements with other pieces. Create one-of-a-kind collection pieces.
If you are selling, display pieces as sets: earrings, necklaces and bracelets with the same theme or design in the same section (bundle up!). This way, potential customers will be inspired to âcollectâ your jewellery to complete the set.
Identify the features of your jewellery: it is lightweight, made of fine silver which does not tarnish, etc. Also identify the benefits: comfortable to wear, easy to maintain, etc.
Ask for the sale!
Buying jewellery is an emotional decision. Create a positive environment and pleasant experience to facilitate it! Engage in a little conversation, but do not overwhelm your customers!
Donât hesitate to say âshall I wrap this for you?â or something similar. A little polite help can make the difference.
Offer to personalise items for a fee. Fingerprint jewellery is particularly suitable for this. Also, pieces that incorporate a favourite or empowering word can be personalised.
Remember, commissions carry a premium price, since they might be difficult to sell to someone else, and it is also advisable to ask for a 50 per cent deposit.
