Mercury is the winged messenger of the gods, and as such, he rules short journeys and swift communications. He deals with all writings, authors, and record-keeping, and, therefore, schools and research. His qualities are eloquence and intelligence—all capacities of the intellect. He is also known as the Opener of Ways, who carries prayers to the gods and their messages to humankind. But his influence is not always obvious. He is a trickster and a thief, and there are many stories associating him with pranks and thefts; therefore, he rules covert activities, thieving, and spying. By this, it is meant that only through opening our intelligence to new ways of thinking can we achieve what we desire.

In his role as messenger, he is called Mercury/Hermes; as record-keeper and guide, Thoth/Anubis; as trickster and thief, Coyote/Loki. It is interesting to note that as a trickster, he is often involved in pranks that teach the victim by pointing out faults in planning or purpose, or fatal flaws of character from which the victim can learn and grow. In effect, he trips us with our own untied shoelaces in order to make a point.

Mercury corresponds to the solar plexus chakra, the Dancer, and refers to our inner center of personal balance. He opens the ways for self-knowledge. Mercury reminds us that when our own inner harmony is out of tune, nothing will go very far or very well. The work that we do will be the reflection of our imbalance. The metal of Mercury is quicksilver or brass, and its stones are neutral-colored ones, such as onyx or agate.
