CHAPTER ELEVEN

Celebrate successes

Lainie woke the following day in a fabulous mood. She pulled back the blinds to allow the sun to shine in. She poked her head into the hall. “Time to get up,” she chirped.

Jenna seemed to be in a great mood also. To Lainie’s surprise, her daughter was already dressed. “Morning,” Jenna said as she popped into the hallway and headed downstairs.

“Gosh, look at you, ready to go,” Lainie said. “Could you please let Bitsy out? Keep an eye on her, though, with the pool. It is a new place.”

“Kay.”

Lainie smiled. Maybe Jenna’d slept well for the first time since they’d left home. Sharing a hotel room hadn’t produced the most restful environment. So perhaps her amiable mood was due to the rental and having her own room. It did appear to have that perky effect on them. Lainie threw on clothes and headed downstairs. She even felt like making breakfast…not her favorite meal to make. She preferred to grab a protein bar or toast a bagel, something quick that didn’t involve pots and pans to clean when she was finished.

The song from last night was an earworm in her head. It was a new dawn. Okay, so that was enough of that.

She stepped into the kitchen and pulled out a Keurig pod to make coffee.

“Mom, can I have a piece of this chocolate cake for breakfast? It looks so delicious.”

“What cake?” Lainie turned and glanced at the counter where Jenna stood.

“You must have hidden this from us last night. I wouldn’t have passed on it. That’s for sure.”

Lainie stared at the decadent chocolate cake sitting on the counter beside the magazine. She glanced from the picture on the cover to the cake. The images were a perfect match. But how? She had not purchased a cake yesterday at the grocery store.

An odd feeling laced through her. So, where did it come from?

She looked again from the magazine to the cake. Once again, it seemed as if something had appeared out of nowhere, like magic. Like the sunflowers. Her gaze slid to the bright yellow flowers. For the second day in a row, a strange item had appeared.

In addition to the money.

She should check her purse. She marched over to the side table, took hold of her bag, and opened it. There was money inside, just like there had been for the past three days. This was getting freaking ridiculous. In a lovely way, but totally strange.

She would need another duffle bag or a safe to keep the money in.

“Earth to Mom. Where are you? Can I have some of this cake?” Jenna queried, her tone implying she’d asked a few times and that Lainie had zoned out. “It looks too delicious to wait.”

“Yeah. Sure. Just a small piece. I suppose it’s a cake-for-breakfast sort of morning,” she said, befuddled. Maybe early menopause was affecting her brain. Too bad the magical cake couldn’t also be nutritionally balanced and still taste like cake. Best magic ever!

Brennon came bounding downstairs. “Whoa, cake for breakfast.
