CHAPTER 24

“Welcome, dear.” Amr’s mom comes out of the kitchen to pull me into a fierce hug. “Happy birthday.”

“Thanks for allowing Jackie to run wild.” I hug her back. This has to be the most hugs I’ve ever received in such a short period.

“Of course.” She steps back and gives me a once-over. “It’s perfect that the two of you can celebrate together. Amr talks about how much help you’ve been to him.”

“It’s mutual,” I assure her.

About to ask her if she needs any help with dinner, a knock on the door interrupts the offer.

I share a glance with Amr. “Who else is coming?”

He shrugs and narrows his eyes on Jackie. “I thought we said to keep this small and personal.”

“We also said to invite all your friends!” Jackie jumps in place and claps before rushing to the door, throwing it open to reveal Dante, Maverick, and Paden. “Yay! Come in, come in.”

Dante swings his arms wide and declares, “The party has arrived! Let’s have some fun.”

Igraine shakes her head. “Just like his father.”

As she heads back into the kitchen, Dante grabs me around the waist and swings me in circles. “Happy birthday!”

When he sets me down, he hands me a small gift.

“I’ll take that!” Jackie snatches it and strides over to the gift table. “Avalon’s side is the black one.”

I suspected as much by where the presents from my dad were placed, but it still leaves me stunned.

I look at Amr. “Thank you for sharing your party with me.”

“Of course!” Amr grins. “Besides, it gave Mom an excuse to make two cakes. A chocolate cake with dark chocolate icing and strawberries for you and an apple cake with salted caramel icing for me. What we don’t eat tonight we can have for breakfast in the morning.”

“I’m having a slice of both,” Maverick announces as he gives me a hug. “Happy birthday.”

I laugh as I return his hug. “Who says I want to share?”

Maverick’s bottom lip sticks out. “Jackie said this is a birthday party, which means I need cake.” He rubs his stomach. “Chocolate and caramel and more chocolate. It’s a perfect combination.”

“Fine.” I shove him in the shoulder. “Just a small piece.”

He breaks into a smile, and my heart does little flips of happiness. This is how life should be, surrounded by the people who care about you.

Maverick ruins the moment by sticking out his tongue—the most non-Royal thing he’s ever done—before he walks over to wish Amr a happy birthday.

As Dante and Paden come farther inside, I notice that Enid stands in the corner, her arms tightly crossed over her chest.

Concerned, I join Jackie and whisper, “Is anyone else coming?”

“I promise this is everyone.” She follows my gaze to Enid and shrugs helplessly. “I did invite Triton, but he couldn’t make it.”

Some of my excitement deflates. Triton’s been absent a lot the last couple of weeks. I hope, for Enid’s sake, that something big isn’t going on with him.

“Do you need more people here?” Paden’s deep voice fills my ear, sending shivers down my spine.
