Fighting the Unknown

Essentia lashed out and slammed into my Aegis. I flew back and hit the ground in a heap, rolling to get back to my feet as quickly as I could.

Greymalkin was already out from my coat, and the small black cat bounded left. Two of Dalton’s thugs opened fire, spraying their bullets at us while Adina and Conor fired back as they took cover behind parked cars. Conor had pulled a pistol from his belt, while Adina used her usual twin semi-automatics.

Behind the two Riven thugs, the pair of creatures transformed. They doubled in size, their arms and shoulders bulging with fibrous muscle under slick grey skin, while thick tentacles whipped about from their backs as they changed.

Greymalkin broke left and was suddenly a huge mass of living darkness that engulfed one of the creatures, while Perry darted right. She moved incredibly fast, rushing into the creature as wicked claws appeared from her fingertips.

Dalton was briefly distracted as we engaged his thugs. He looked surprised, and actually a little afraid of the speed and ferocity of Greymalkin, and frankly, I didn’t blame him. She was scary when she wanted to be.

Taking advantage of his momentary lapse in concentration, I threw fire at him and followed it up with several shots from my Magical revolver.

~Yeah, there you go, that’s the good stuff,~ Brandt grunted in my ear.

~Glad you’re enjoying it,~ I commented.

~Always.~

The fire hit Dalton and knocked him back as it sloughed over his Aegis, tearing lengths off it.

“Ugh, Argent,” Dalton grimaced. “You’ll pay for that.”

Essentia flashed from the Nomad again, and my rushing fire was doused by his Magic. Lightning snapped out of him and hit me, but I braced my feet and held on. I wasn’t about to get knocked over quite so easily again.

“You’re tough, I’ll give you that,” he said.

“Tougher than you know,” I replied.

~Use me again,~ Brandt called out. I fully intended to, I just needed to bring the weapon to bear. For a moment, I considered boosting my defences, and then quickly changed my mind, choosing the riskier path. Ignoring my weakening Aegis, I threw caution to the wind and sent a spike of Essentia back at him. The Magic hit hard, and Dalton grunted as he retaliated with a similar attack.

My Aegis cracked but held. I sent a silent thank you to the Mother Aeon, or whatever higher power was looking out for me, and Linked with Brandt.

~Explosive rounds, Brandt,~

~Excellent choice, sir, enjoy.~ the ring replied as I fired again.

BOOM!

The explosion was intense, and the Nomad was sent flying.

“Boo-yah!” I whooped and made the most of the brief break in fighting by dumping Essentia into my Aegis, healing the cracks.

To my right, Adina scored a hit on a Riven gunman and sent him to the ground. She refocused on the creature Perry was engaged in hand to hand with.

“By the Grace of God, what is she doing?” Adina commented. “She’s…got claws.”

“And she’d on our side, so help her,” I shouted back. With
