Riverwoods Park. Shallowater.

Farrell parked behind the pickup sitting on the driveway. Decent looking Chevy Silverado, couple of years old. He walked around to the back of the trailer and let himself in.

The second he stepped through the door, tears burned behind his eyes, and he fought to hold them back. Laine’s scent was in the trailer. Her perfume, her shampoo, the essence of her. She’d been here with Pete Sanchez.

Starting at the back door, Farrell completed a thorough and methodical search of the trailer. Used to looking for drugs, it didn’t take him long to move the boxes in the storage room and remove the piece of paneling behind.

Nothing there. No drugs. No cash.

He checked every inch of the trailer. Ceiling tiles. All of it. While moving from room to room, his brain was working.

“Sanchez is the local dealer—Laine’s dealer. She needs him. Got it.” Farrell tried his damndest to be objective, but it wasn’t working.

The bedroom had been stripped of clothes and personal belongings. Same in the bathroom. No toiletries. Nada.

The trailer was clean, and Sanchez was gone, so why was his truck in the driveway? Keys to the truck were lying in plain sight on the kitchen counter like they were placed there for a reason.

“Somebody is picking the truck up.” Farrell was talking it out, trying to make sense of it. “Why isn’t Sanchez driving his own truck if he’s in the wind? Okay. Maybe he can’t drive his truck? Why not? It isn’t running or he’s hurt and can’t physically drive?”

Farrell’s cop brain made a leap. Three names in the file the day Zuckerman died. Zuckerman beats up Sanchez to get the name of his supplier—common practice with dirty cops. Laine needs Sanchez and his drug supply. Either Laine or Sanchez kills Zuckerman.

Could Laine kill another cop if she had a reason?

Farrell thought about his wife’s service record and all the ordnance she kept in her footlocker and answered the hypothetical question. “Yep, she sure could.”

Outside, a comprehensive search of the truck turned up nothing. Farrell started the engine to check, and it was running fine. They were in Laine’s Jeep for another reason.

Sanchez has to be hurt. How bad?

Farrell sat behind the wheel of his own truck and called Blacky. “I’m at Pete Sanchez’s trailer.”

“He’s the dealer?”

“Laine’s dealer.”

“Okay, Zuckerman was on Laine’s dealer,” said Blaine. “How dependent is she?”

“Has to be worse than I thought.”

A pause while Blacky thought about it. “Put it together, bro. It was already bad. So fuckin bad she had to leave you. You’re a cop and you can’t be married to a junkie.”

“Jesus, is that what she was thinking?”

“Has to be. Laine loves you. She loves you so much she’s divorcing you to protect you from herself. She’s putting miles between the two of you. She’s in big trouble, Farrell.”

Farrell couldn’t get enough oxygen. “Her mother said she had a checkup last week and there’s more deterioration in her back.”

“Aw, shit. This is getting worse by the minute. What are you going to do?”

“If Laine or Sanchez killed Zuckerman, I’m doing nothing.
