TWENTY-THREE
DECISION
Yaw held his infant daughter Kylie in his arms, still learning to be comfortable with her delicateness, the contrast of a tiny soft skinned child against the large muscular frame of her father only serving to highlight his awareness of her fragility. The girl cooed blissfully as Yaw sat on the end of the bed, holding her tiny frame on his forearm between his hand and elbow, cradling her small head with his fingers while rocking her, as his eyes locked on his progeny, incredulous at her existence and unable to help being mesmerized by the little human figure not much bigger than his hand. Yaw looked up from his daughter as he sensed Camilla enter the room. He followed Camilla with his eyes as she sat down next to him.
âWant me to take her?â Camilla whispered.
âNaw, Iâm okay.â
Yaw caressed a miniature cheek with his index finger and Kylie gripped the finger on instinct with her tiny little hand.
Camilla watched the two of them and smiled. To her, seeing father and daughter together in an tender moment like this was beautiful in such a way that stopped time for her, as if the universe was allowing her an instant of complete awareness, of unconditional love flowing like a true force of nature through all three of them, connecting them, and with that connection came a brief and total understanding of the purpose and cycle of life. But that allowance, that glimpse into the totality of larger forces at work was always temporary, and the look on Camillaâs face slowly turned serious at the thought of what lay immediately ahead for her daughterâs father.
âIâm not going.â Yaw said, as if reading her thoughts. âI need to stay here. I need to take care of Kylie. And you. Alex will understand.â
Yaw moved his captive finger with the tiny hand attached to it back and forth, and Kylie gurgled with glee.
âYou have to go.â Camilla said, her voice barely above a whisper. âI can take care of myself. And Kylie. You know this. You know my strength. Itâs one of the reasons why you love me.â
Yaw turned to Camilla.
âI canât leave you.â
âYouâre not. Thereâs something special about Alex.â Camilla continued. âLarger than what we can understand. I feel it, from blood to bone. He can change the world. And I mean for real. I think thatâs what Mawith was trying to tell us,â She said, referring to the old Indianâs prophetic words about Alex, spoken to the entire group over a year ago in the Arizona desert.
âI know.â Yaw whispered softly, almost to himself.
âBut I canât--â
âThereâs more to it than that.â
âWhat do you mean?â
Kylie started to fuss, and Camilla reached for her daughter on instinct. Equally on instinct, the infant let go of the grip she held on her fatherâs finger and transitioned to her mothers arms with little fuss before going silent. Kylie put her hand on her motherâs face, and Camilla blew into it. She smiled down at her daughter, and the infant smiled back.
