CHAPTER SEVEN

Sally

I was dating the son of the richest rancher in Colorado. Edgar had refused to tell me anything about his family, and I had learned to live with that until that night, when he told me he had to go to Colorado.

“What? What do you mean?” I had asked.

He stared at me for a while before answering, “It’s my father. He’s died. My aunt wants me home, so we can arrange the funeral.”

I didn’t say anything. It was sad to hear of the death of his father, but the expression on his face made me think he didn’t care. What was Edgar hiding from me?

It wasn’t my job to ask questions, but if we were going to be in a relationship, I needed to know more about him. I wondered if that would make me a hypocrite. I was the one who had told Edgar we shouldn’t be that invested in this relationship and he had seemed okay with it. But lately, I figured that Edgar was more than a sex partner to me. He made me feel like a different person, as if I was suddenly swimming in an ocean of love and couldn’t control myself.

Dana said I was in love, but I chose not to believe her. Was it possible that Sally Potter had finally found a man she couldn’t stop thinking about. How convenient would it be if Edgar let me know his feelings? I didn’t want to be the first to say it. What if I was wrong? What if he wasn’t the right person for me, and he had not even a teensy bit of love for me? Just as I had been to Bruce; I was merely a girl he enjoyed fucking.

“I’ll be leaving in three days,” Edgar said as he got up from the bed and slipped into his trousers.

“I… this is all so sudden. I’m sorry about your father’s death. Don’t get me wrong, but would it sound selfish if I say I don’t want you to go?”

Edgar just smiled.

“Yes, it sounds selfish,” I answered my own question.

“I didn’t really like the old man, so this is merely a family duty I must do.”

“Sorry? You didn’t like your father?”

“Ever heard of Rogers Walton?”

“Well I have heard of Rogers Walton, the head of the Walton Ranch in Colorado, the man who owns one of the biggest farms in the country. He…” I paused when it hit me. “Oh my God, he’s your father?”

“I don’t really tell people. Our relationship isn’t one to talk about.”

I clasped a hand over my mouth. This was unbelievable. I had been fucking the son of a billionaire. Why didn’t Edgar tell me? I was curious to know why he hated Rogers.

“Is it something you want to talk about?”

“Not really. Just let me get to Colorado and pay my respects.”

“If you hated him so much, why are you going?”

“Because, I’ve got no choice. That man may be a monster but he’s the reason I am here in the first place.
