Sunday on the way to church I come up with the idea of getting Chief to help me with Lucky. After church, I change clothes, meet up with Chief, and walk him into the round pen. A breeze moves fluffy white clouds through the blue sky, coaxing a few leaves off trees. And just as I’d hoped, Lucky trots beside the big plow horse.

Once in the center of the ring, I raise my arm and make a kissing noise for Chief to circle the pen, even though I’d only need to give him Mom’s “move out” look for him to know what I want him to do. When he takes off, Lucky follows him.

“Good girl, Lucky!” I use my friendliest voice.

The horses trot around twice, with Lucky bringing up the rear. The sound of their hooves matches my heartbeat, like they’re making music together. I inhale the sweet smell of horse that floats on the autumn breeze.

“Whoa!” I take a step back, lowering my head. Chief obeys the signal to come back to the center and stand. Lucky imitates him.

We do this over and over until I think we’ve all had enough. Ol’ Chief is sweating a bit, in spite of a growing chill in the air. I turn them both out in the pasture. Lucky tosses her head, twists her neck, and prances around Chief.

But Chief looks too tired to play.

After a brief rest, I take Lucky into the pen but leave Chief outside. Sunlight streaks through yellow-tipped leaves, making Chief zebra-striped.
