“Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you! Happy birthday, Kuriko, happy birthday to you,” I sang. I held a wrapped gift and a slice of homemade carrot cake with lit candles.

“Thank you, chica.” She blew out the candles. “This is sweet of you, but you didn’t have to buy me anything.

“Seriously, Kuriko, you only turn 19 once.”

“You didn’t have to.”

“Well, I did. Plus this.” I handed her the gift I bought and watched in excitement as she opened it.

“Oh my God!” Kuriko smiled at the red Asian vibrator with matching case “You are too crazy. I love this! No more sleepless nights for me.” She winked and threw it in her duffel bag.

I noticed her packed clothes. “Where are you going?”

“You remember Mr. Hibachi from The Geisha Room?”

“The man who came here earlier?”

“Yeah. He invited me to the Cayman Islands for my birthday weekend. It’s just a getaway through Sunday because his children have parent teacher conferences at school on Monday. This will be a quick drive-by for us. And besides, it’s been a minute since I’ve been to the islands.” She paused. “But I will enjoy my new toy, I guarantee you that.”

“When are you leaving?” I asked.

“He’ll be by to pick me up shortly. You can take my car this weekend if you’d like.”

“Thanks.” My smile faded.

“What’s wrong?”

“The guy at Sure Ink almost hired me today, but didn’t ’cause he needed two forms of ID.”

“That bites. Oh, I’m sorry, puss.” Kuriko hugged me. “Things will get better for you.”

“I just need to start working again so I can buy my own car. I’m tired of using yours.”

“That’s an easy fix. Just go buy a car. You can get a good deal on a used vehicle.”

“Hello, Rico. I’m fifteen, remember? Plus, I don’t have any ID on me to sign any paperwork or enroll in drivers’ education. It totally sucks being young.”

“I can get you a fake ID for the next few months.”

“Won’t the shops figure it out?”

“Hopefully not before February. By then apply to the state for your original documents.”

“I don’t know. I could get in trouble and the last thing I need is the feds on my trail and my family in Utah tracking me down.”

“There are plenty of illegal aliens in this county working two or three jobs. How are they able to pull that off? You’re an American citizen who misplaced documentation. If anyone questions you tell them the truth about your adoption. Surely anyone with a heart will understand.”

I thought about Kuriko’s suggestion. Every shop owner in town will want an ID and I have to be eighteen to work in any of them. It really makes no sense for me to obtain a state issued identification since I am not of age to work in a tattoo shop as an artist or apprentice.

“Okay, fine. How much is it?” I asked.

“I’ll take care of that next week when I get back. Just chill out this weekend. Don’t worry about getting a job.
