What am I going to do now? The man standing in front of me tonight wasn't the Mario I left behind after graduation. He wore a gray tailored suit and his hair a tad longer than he ever let it get when we were teenagers. The closer he got to me, the tighter my chest became. After all these years, he still had the same effect on me. Like anyone else, we had our ups and downs, but he was always there for me. Everyone thought we would end up married one day, and everyone around us could see our bond, but we both were too afraid to admit it back then. Mostly for the fear of rejection. Now, we were both living the lives we dreamed of, but the pressure was still there. I wanted to rip it to shreds.

The contrast between the idea of him being here and his physical presence was immense. The instant he realized I was in the room and our eyes met, the connection was undeniable. He stood there, gazing at the scene before him, his face bearing an expression that almost conveyed his disbelief. Did he not know about me being the maid of honor? Maybe there was a reason for keeping it from him. Celia couldn’t have known that it would affect him, but catching him off guard wasn’t in my plans.

“So, what’s going on with him?” I asked, gesturing to the door. “Did he leave because of me?”

“No, he has a big case and he would rather be at the office working.”

I might have looked him up once or twice. Articles popped up about the cases he won and lost, and then the announcement of Mario becoming one of the youngest partners at the firm in history. Something he talked about immensely in high school. He had big aspirations and to know that one of his dreams came true because of his hard work was gratifying. None of the articles talked about him dating anyone though. It shouldn’t matter at this point. The thought of leaving my job behind and moving to New York City was just a harmless fantasy.

“He looks to be doing well for himself,” I said to Celia, whose eyes never left me since he walked out the door. “That suit must cost a fortune from the looks of it.”

Was she trying to read me? It was hard to keep anything from her, just like it was Mario, but this situation was far from normal. I didn’t want to walk on eggshells around two of my best friends. Yet I had to. Celia knew how I felt about her brother, and even then, she kept things to herself and never told him. I respected that.

She laughed. “Yeah, my brother doesn’t have much to spend his money on, so his clothes are over-the-top expensive. But one day, when he lets someone in, he’ll be broke.”

My awaited moment arrived. The confirmation of him being single. But did it matter? I am involved with a guy in a casual and undefined relationship.
