CHAPTER 18

A s I tried to come up with lunch ideas, I called Kim. “Sorry about that. Yes, there was a murder here and we were at a neighbor’s house and then checking the house where the murder occurred. The victim was a young woman. Her mother is coming into town tomorrow.” I walked back to the kitchen as I talked. Egg salad came to mind as a good choice. While I fixed lunch, I gave Kim the condensed version and we arranged for dinner the next week.

Brett cleared his throat. “Do you have plans today? Like after lunch?”

“Not really. What did you have in mind?”

“One important errand – kitty litter. I have to go into the office and do paperwork.” He looked tired. We definitely needed a vacation after this.

“I can take care of kitty stuff. Maybe you could call Batista and mention the kitty? I’ll find out what’s on Maddie’s schedule. She really should be up by now.”

Charlie woofed his agreement and we both laughed. Brett stepped outside to take a call. Charlie and I went in the direction of Maddie’s room. Charlie stopped and sniffed at the office door, tilting her head at me.

“Never mind, Charlie. You need to get Maddie and Bella up.”

Back in the kitchen, I realized I didn’t have enough egg salad if Fabry wanted to eat. And Fabry always wanted to eat. Maddie padded in with Bella in her arms.

“Why are you carrying her?”

She exhaled in a huff. “She and Charlie planted themselves in front of the office. I don’t know about Charlie. Bella needs to go out.”

I opened the door for her and she put Bella down, slipped back inside, and plopped onto a chair. I shoved the sandwich in front of her and then glanced down the hall. Charlie guarded the door to the office.

“Why is Charlie acting so weird? Do you have a brisket or something hidden in there?”

I chuckled. “We found a kitten at Natalie’s house. She’s in the office ….”

Maddie’s mouth dropped, her eyes wide, and she was up and running before I could finish. Laughing I followed her as she stood at the door.

“You can open it. The kitten is in Bella’s old crate.”

She opened the door and Charlie plowed into her to get to the crate. Flattening herself on the floor, her nose in line with the kitten’s face, she whined. The kitten licked Charlie’s nose and Charlie licked back, her tongue covering the kitten’s face. Maddie and I both laughed. A Sheltie, Charlie’s head was as big as the kitten.

“She’s so cute. Can I hold her?”

“Maybe later. When the dogs are contained and she’s in a smaller area where she can’t hide from us.”

I heard the front door and Brett yelled, “Where is everyone? Bella need to come in?”

Maddie disappeared and returned, along with Brett. He took in the room as Bella investigated the situation. Bella growled at the kitten and Charlie hit Bella with a paw.

Looking around the room, Brett worked his jaw. “She can’t stay in here.
