Episode Three
Chapter One
“You have a feeling? A feeling? You want us to leave our home? Everything we’ve built? You want us to go back to that war zone and risk our lives and our families because you have a feeling?” Harrison’s voice rang out just slightly higher than the other protests.
“I didn’t think you were this selfish, Page.”
“What about all of our work?”
“How do you plan to survive Mexico?”
“What’s wrong with you?”
Some of the questions had gotten lost in the cacophony of outraged voices, but I was pretty sure that last question had come from King.
Brat.
I closed my mouth and folded my arms across my chest. I would continue when they settled down. They were acting like children.
All of them.
Actually, the children were quiet for once, watching attentively as the adults shouted at me.
“Let her talk!” my oldest brother’s voice cut straight through the chatter and captured every single person’s attention. Heads swung to glare at him and the energy in the room shifted and pulsed with confusion. Hendrix held their angry stares with confidence that rooted deep inside his being. My brothers were all self-assured and dominating, but Hendrix most of all. He radiated with conviction and principle. His innate trust in his decisions and instinct left no room to question or doubt him. But that had always been coupled with his loyalty to his family and to our safety. I didn’t know what would happen if he took my side in this conversation. But as much as my family trusted him, I knew they wouldn’t just follow him blindly back to the Colony. Resolve and something deeper flashed in his startling blue eyes when he growled, “We agreed to let her make her case. She can’t do that if you’re just talking over her. Be quiet. Hear what she has to say.”
Heads swiveled back to me and I tried not to audibly gulp. My gaze sought Hendrix’s once again. I found him in the back of the room, arms crossed over his chest, shoulder resting against the wall. He nodded once, encouraging me to go on and I finally took a breath. He believed in me. For whatever crazy reason he had, he trusted that I had a good reason for wanting to go back. That simple gesture gave me more confidence than I’d been able to gather on my own.
I knew I was right. But I also doubted every single one of my choices. I could argue with myself until the end of time. But Hendrix’s single nod, that small gesture of trust, solidified every crazy thought bouncing around in my head.
I cleared my throat and faced my family. “A week ago, Feeders came into our home. They disrupted our peace, they threatened our safety and they nearly killed one of our own.” My eyes rested briefly on Stevie, where she sat curled up on Haley’s lap. “We’re not safe here. Not anymore. I know that we can blame Hank for the Feeders. And by blaming him, we can blame Luke and the resistance.
