Jett had told her not to let her mind go there, but how could she not? Her father had made it quite clear that she was not welcome to view his books. She wasn’t even welcome to enter his office now. He either really distrusted her or he was hiding something. Could he be involved in criminal activities? The thought had her pacing back and forth in her private room.

Growing up at the ski lodge had always been a unique situation. While her friends had homes and yards that were for them only, Nic had had to share her home and yard with visitors every day and night.

The Harrington family’s private living quarters were sequestered at the back of the lodge, away from the hotel rooms. There was a small kitchen and living room, as well as their bedrooms. Since returning home, Nic had yet to see her father in any of the rooms. She’d assumed he’d chosen to stay in one of the rented suites, and as she walked through the living area toward his typical bedroom, the one he’d shared with her mother, she wondered how long ago he had moved out of their private quarters.

Nic reached for the knob to his bedroom door. She knew it was unlocked; when she’d first arrived home, she had opened it to find it empty. Once again, she stood in the open doorway, but this time she stepped inside.

Never before had she felt the need to snoop on her father. Searching through his room felt like a violation of trust. So much of the space reminded of her of her mother. Her feminine touch was everywhere. This was a room that did not belong in the rustic lodge. For the first time, Nic realized Claire Harrington’s femininity permeated the walls of her husband’s ruggedness. Les Harrington may be able to live outdoors for days on end, but when he entered this room, he would be reminded that there was another way to live. A more gentle way.

Nic traced her finger across the Victorian dresser. Dust from many months came away. She walked past the canopy bed and felt the smooth railing at the foot. Floral pillow shams held the memory of the lilac scent of her mother’s perfume. Nic approached the nightstand. The lampshade with fringe tickled her wrist as she turned on the light. The darkened room quickly softened in its a warm glow.

She turned to face her mother’s writing desk. The cover was closed tight, its antique chair with the red plush cushion tucked in close. Nic pulled it out and sat. She raised the lid of the desk and folded it back. For a few seconds, she just stared at a moment frozen in time. It didn’t look like her father had touched anything in twenty years. Claire Harrington’s personal effects remained still. Old letters filled the upper slats. Yellowed stationery, tucked into a box, waited for its owner to pen the next letter. A letter that would never come.
