âAre you sure you must be the one to take her? There are servants who will gladly go to your home and watch over her for you.â Solon glanced to the cart padded with blankets for Cassandra. His hazel-green eyes shone with concern, as a piece of his longer hair whipped into his face. He frowned in irritation, jerking the leather tie from his locks and rebinding the sides back.
âAye,â Iason answered, glancing up from where he stared at the straps of his sandals. The sky was dark blue, abnormally dark for the daytime, yet it was light out. The dome must have shifted with the currents. Inside it, they didnât feel the movements, but the lighting and location of their world did change as they drifted endlessly along the oceanâs floor. âI am her guardian. It is my responsibility. If she doesnât make it and I am not there to oversee her careââ
âI understand,â Solon broke in. âThis way your honor will not be questioned as you handled your responsibility. I cannot order you to stay.â
Iason nodded, as he looked around the inner courtyard to the palace. Large arches lifted overhead, leading back inside, back to where Althea prepared Cassandra for the journey. He again questioned the wisdom of his actions, but he would not say the words to Solon. If Solon knew what he risked for a dying mortal, he would be outraged.
He turned to the front gate, seeing a glimpse of their sacred city, Atlas, in the valley below. The palace sat atop a large hill with a long earthen path that led down to the city. Most of the Merr preferred to live outside the city walls in the countryside, but there were a few homes and shops. The roads of Atlas were evenly laid out on a square grid, looking very clean and orderly. Long walls wound all the way around the city. Bright yellow lines ran along the blue glazed stone. Just like inside the palace, it too almost seemed to glow in the light. The images of sea creatures from the Abyss were depicted along the walls, rising off the flat surface. The artistic detail had taken nearly two decades to complete.
âIason? Iason, are you listening?â Solon asked.
Iason blinked in confusion. He hadnât been listening. âWhat?â
âBoth scylla are alive. We have them chained,â Solon said.
Iason nodded. âThis was a peculiar hunt, was it not? Two scylla and three mortals. All alive.â
âIt was a good hunt,â Solon said, nodding in satisfaction. âWe have done ourselves proud. No doubt the other teams will be sorry they took a break.â
âAye.â Iason clasped Solon by the wrist. They squeezed slightly before letting go. âIâm sorry I must leave you. Send word to the country if you have need of me on the hunt. Otherwise, I will stay until she is better.â
âI do not wish for a woman to claim, but I understand why you must tend to her. Take whatever time you need and do what you must,â Solon said.
