CHAPTER

TWENTY-TWO

Gideon

After I drop Harlow back at her house, I meet the guys at the office. We’re all still in our workout clothes since we all received the same threatening text from Acadia, and that needs to be dealt with as soon as possible. Theo is already hard at work on his computer, and Sterling is helping him with something over his shoulder. Alaric is on the phone, and as I walk over with coffees for everyone, he puts the phone on speaker.

“They’ve gotten the authorities involved,” the person says, and I recognize the voice as Kurtz, one of our spies in Russia. “Some of the Acadian members are headed to London later today, and they’re going to review the security footage.”

“That means nothing. Theo already scrubbed it,” Alaric answers, sounding bored.

“Of course, my Lord. However, there are eyewitnesses that saw you two leave together.”

Alaric’s jaw feathers. “Okay. So we find someone else to pin this on.”

“What about his phone?” Kurtz asks.

“We have it,” Alaric answers.

“Good. We can edit the chip data to show texts from a burner phone.”

“Let’s do that,” Alaric answers.

“I didn’t realize Armin was a target,” Kurtz says, typing something on his end.

Alaric’s eyes find mine. “He wasn’t. But he touched something that wasn't his.”

The double entendre goes right over Kurtz’s head, and they continue their conversation for a few more minutes as I sip my coffee. I flick my switchblade open and closed, focusing on the heavy metal weapon in my palm.

“So, what’s the plan?” Sterling asks, walking over to me.

“Kurtz is taking care of Armin’s phone. Looks like killing him was a lot messier than we realized.”

It was true. When we made our kills, it was usually after weeks of thorough planning, ensuring no loose ends that would lead back to us. Our first target yesterday was supposed to be attending the dinner, and somehow, he got tipped off that we were going to be there, so he fled. We hunted him down and killed him, but because we’d already planned on killing him anyway, there was nothing more to do.

We’d sent his wife a suicide note, and his car is abandoned on the side of the road now.

No one would ask questions, and his wife wouldn’t be digging too deeply, seeing as she could now openly be with her lover.

“Once the authorities get into Armin’s hotel room, they’ll be able to access his cellphone data, which we will have, of course, altered to show threatening texts from a burner phone.”

“Who are we pinning it on?” he asks.

I shrug. “Does it matter? We could take any of these children out with a flick of our wrist. We’re being polite by cooperating. Charles would’ve just had everyone in Acadia murdered. Problem solved.”

Sterling snorts. “Maybe that’s why he had so many enemies, and why he was so easily swayed. Because he acted with emotions.”

“Seems like his daughter inherited that tendency,” I add, thinking of Harlow last night—of how pained she looked after killing Armin. “But unlike Charles, I don’t think Harlow has it in her to betray us.
