Chapter 12

Lord and Lady Thayer arrived at their country estate in the late afternoon the day after they left London to be welcomed by a full staff. The trip could have been done in one long day, but Stephen didn’t want Annalise to be too tired when they arrived. He had spent the extra time explaining what would happen when they reached the hall. What he didn’t mention was that he intended to carry his bride across the threshold in keeping with tradition. Annalise giggled and then put her hand over her mouth because she knew that she needed to be Lady Thayer at this point.

Stephen leaned down and whispered in her ear before he set her down, “There will be no giggling, Lady Thayer. Only my Anna and my Leesie may giggle. So giggling will be allowed to resume after the introductions. Once we have discharged our duties, I shall be intent on assisting you in producing those giggles once again. So please be prepared.”

He gave her a look of mock sternness before setting her on her feet. Annalise took a couple of seconds to bring her manner back into more formal mode as her husband, true to his word, introduced each staff member. He waited while she said a few words and he was quite proud of the way that she was able to present herself.

“I shall be showing Lady Thayer our chambers and familiarizing her with some of the routines for the rest of the day. We will have dinner at the normal hour, and if you would have a light tea for us in one hour, we should be most grateful.”

Lord Thayer escorted Lady Thayer up to their bedchambers and proceeded to acquaint his ladyship with the comfort and versatility of his bed. Anna giggled often.

For the first couple of days, Stephen was intent on Annalise learning about her new home. To that end, he took her throughout the house several times, pointing out certain things that would alert her to the placement of the rooms. Such as his study was next to the library and should she be summoned to him with very few exceptions, she would be summoned to his study. The library was where she would be expected to read the books that he instructed her to read. She was not to question his choices, for they were to help with her education. Of course, any other book, in addition to his choices, would be perfectly acceptable.

“Must I read?” Annalise wrinkled her nose. Upon looking at her husband’s scowl, she straightened her face quickly, giving him a sheepish smile to soften her question.

“So by your question, it mandates I ask two others. Have you learned how to read?”

“Quite a while ago, my father insisted. My mother loved to read. Although after Father died, we did not have many books. The ones we retained, Mother read them until they returned to dust. Personally, I don’t want to read about how lovely the world is, how wonderful people are, or how I should be thankful for the smallest crumb of bread.
