Chapter 4

“Why aren’t you drunk?” Taya demanded as they closed the hatch of the ship behind them.

“Because I can hold my liquor,” Barb said with dignity, trying to ignore the fact her head was spinning a bit and the room felt strangely muffled and a long way off. “Also, you made me eat a mountain of noodles, which probably soaked it up.”

“I ate a mountain of noodles, too, and I’m sloshed.”

“Yes, but you were probably still half-drunk from the night before.” Barb took off her jacket and tossed it on the back of a chair. Taya grabbed it and started going through the pockets. “What are you doing?”

“You’ve got blunters, haven’t you? That’s why you’re not drunk.”

“I certainly have not. And I resent the accusation.” Taya still looked at her suspiciously. Barb sighed and turned the pockets of her pants inside out. Empty. “There. Nothing.”

“You could have them concealed.”

“What, you think I have a secret pocket in my bra, maybe?”

“You don’t? They sent you in poorly equipped for this job.”

“You have a secret pocket in your bra?”

“Three in fact. Wanna see?” Taya reached for the hem of her shirt.

“No,” Barb snapped out at once. She wanted to say yes, and not because she cared about any secret pockets in Taya’s super special spy bra.

“Okay. But I want to frisk you.”

Barb laughed. “You can try.”

“Oh, yes, I’ll try.” Taya strode forward.

Barb backed into the wall in a couple of steps. She wasn’t afraid of Taya. One on one, she could take her—unless Taya had concealed weapons Barb didn’t know about. But Barb didn’t want to fight her.

She didn’t fight. When Taya stopped in front of her, close, but not touching, a question in her eyes, Barb gave a long-suffering sigh. She raised her arms, stretching her form-fitting shirt tight.

“Sure,” she said. “Frisk me. I don’t have any blunters.”

Taya gave Barb a wicked smile. She reached out and rested her hands on Barb’s waist then ran them up and down her sides. Heat swept over Barb’s skin. Everything tingled. Her hair felt like it was standing on end.

“Oh, Barb, honey,” Taya whispered, leaned in, running her hands down, over Barb’s hips, and around to cup her ass. Barb sighed. It turned into a word.

“Yes.”

Taya kissed her.

She tasted peachy. In both the literal and metaphorical sense. Taya tasted complex. Of all the things she ate and drank tonight. But again, metaphorically, too. She was complex. She was probably sane. Barb still hadn’t decided for sure. But her first impression had modified.

Barb pulled Taya closer, even while knowing she should push her away. This was wrong. Getting involved with another agent while in the middle of a mission? Unprofessional. Taya moved against her, still in her coat with all its gratuitous buckles and zips and flaps. The touch teased Barb’s inflamed skin. Her knees shook. A moan forced its way from her, and she couldn’t stop herself pushing against Taya with her hips, grinding against her.

“Been a while?” Taya asked, pulling back enough to speak, not so far Barb didn’t feel Taya’s warm breath still on her mouth.
