CHAPTER TWELVE

It was dark when Kathleen woke up, and quiet all around. She was lying down on the blanket where they had fallen asleep, facing the glowing remains of their little campfire, tucked safely inside the circle of Ashleigh's arms. She listened for a while. Ashleigh's breathing was deep and regular, and she felt deliciously heavy and warm against her back. Asleep, Kathleen decided. She exhaled slowly, and closed her eyes again.

For once in her life, she was feeling at peace, deliciously happy and contented. She had never anticipated that their evening would turn out as it had, especially after Ashleigh’s little bombshell. Those crazy things she said… Kathleen pushed the thought aside. There would be ample time to think about all this, later, when she was back at the house with Andrew. Meanwhile, he would wonder where she was. He knew she had gone out to see Ashleigh... Would he worry about them? A little smile appeared on Kathleen's lips. Not a chance. Was she sorry that she had let Ashleigh make love to her? Absolutely not. She could not remember falling asleep, or anything they might have said... But she definitely remembered rising over the edge with her, and she wished that she could go back, and experience the delicious, intoxicating, heady sensation over and over again.

She reached for Ashleigh’s hand now, and pressed her lips against her palm. Strong hands, a little rough. The hands of a woman who was used to handling a sword, and was the best hunter of her clan. And yet, Ashleigh's caresses had been infinitely tender, her touch both gentle and powerful in a way that Kathleen would have never imagined it could be. The way Ashleigh had touched her, physically and emotionally, had felt different to her, better, and a hundred times more intense than anything else she had experienced before. She sighed. She wedged herself a little tighter against her chest, still holding her hand in both of hers.

"Kathleen?" Ashleigh mumbled against the back of her neck. “Are you all right?”

"Yes. Did I wake you?"

"Are you cold?"

"No. I’m okay."

Kathleen felt Ashleigh move behind her. She rolled onto her back until she could look into her eyes. There she was, her mysterious friend. In all her naked glory. Kathleen flashed her a warm grin.

"How are you doing?"

The question earned her a brilliant smile in response.

"Great," Ashleigh replied, and yet she moved to stand up.

"Where are you going?" Kathleen protested. "Stay..."

Ashleigh's expression softened immediately. She leaned over Kathleen to brush a gentle kiss against her lips.

"I will be right back," she promised. She rubbed her hand over her lover’s naked arm. "You've got goose bumps. I am just going to check on the horse, and get this fire going again."

She stood up, not bothering with either shoes or clothes. Kathleen watched her walk away, dressed in nothing other than the silver torc around her neck. She seemed incredibly comfortable in her own flesh, and not the least bit shy about walking around in the nude like this.
