Chapter Ten

Margie was relieved when she found the trail that broke off to her left. The tension in her shoulders and abdominal muscles relaxed, and she felt like she was in control again. She enjoyed the view, smiled and nodded at other walkers, and stepped forward with confidence. She would check out the loop, satisfy herself that she hadn’t missed anything—or alternatively, gain some insight that they had not had before—and she would still have some time to go back to the office to review any other evidence or leads that had come in during her absence. She might be a little late getting home, but Christina would be fine on her own for a couple of hours.

Margie’s stomach tightened again when she remembered the squirrel and the rabbit and the possibility that someone was stalking and threatening her. She didn’t want to be late getting home. She didn’t want Christina taking Stella out for a walk alone. A dog was good defense, and people wouldn’t usually attack someone accompanied by a large dog. But it didn’t always hold. There was still the possibility that someone would recognize Stella’s true wuss nature and not be worried about her reaction. Or they would bring a knife or a gun and be ready to take her out. Or a piece of meat spiked with poison or sewing needles.

She picked up her pace. She shouldn’t be wasting so much time walking around the park. Her tour hadn’t given her any insight into whether the killer or Smith might have been some kind of treasure hunter, maybe rivals in hunting artifacts. It had been a long shot, but she had hoped that being there would provide the key piece of information that she needed to solve the case.

Nothing on the pathway looked familiar. But Margie had come onto it a different way than she had previously. Or was it the same route as she had taken when Richardson brought her in on the golf cart, and it was just her perspective or speed that made it seem foreign? Margie scanned the scenery, not seeing the beauty anymore, just desperately looking for something that resonated with her. Something familiar that would reassure her that she was on the right path. She had taken her first left, so it should have been the Tiger Lily Loop. She’d missed it the first time but, when she had reversed, coming back from the tall, ominous-looking chimney, she had taken the correct turn. She was sure of it. Ian had said to take the right, and she had reversed direction and taken the left.

For a long time, she didn’t see anyone else. The trail dipped down when she had expected it to continue to rise. The trees didn’t look right. Nothing looked right. A couple of cyclists whizzed by her, too fast for her to flag them down or ask any questions. Finally, she saw a woman neatly dressed in khakis and a white hat coming toward her, a trekking pole in each hand.
