02 The first part of the trail is a mix of roots, steps and dirt, with pretty deciduous forest and lots of verdant green.

03 About 15 minutes in, the trail opens on a small clearing with a covered picnic area and some benches. This is a nice spot for a break, though you may not be needing it yet.

04 Continuing onward, the trail gets noticeably steeper, with a series of switchbacks. Rocks, roots, loose dirt and mud make the going slippery at times.

05 As you ascend further, the trees get lower and thinner, and you’ll have your first glimpses of the view around the 700m mark.

06 The view only gets better as you reach the summit (1126m), where it all becomes worth it: a beautiful panorama of the surrounding forest, park and villages, with the lake visible far below you and another small lake in the crater depression.

07 Return the way you came, being careful to stay on the trail to Ukinunoike and not to detour on the Chūgoku Nature Trail.
