“It’s alright, I completely understand, Mr. Dixon.”

Mary Alice had noticed Mr. Dixon’s interest reflected in his dark eyes. What surprised her was that she was not repulsed by it nor threatened in any way. She actually welcomed it. She inhaled sharply putting her hand on her suddenly jittery stomach.

“Are you all right, Miss Walker? May I get you some water?”

Will’s concern appeared genuine.

“No thank you. Maybe some fresh air.” Her legs quivered when she admitted to herself that what she really wanted was to be out from the prying eyes of the townsfolk and alone with Will.

“Certainly,” Will said, stepping aside and escorting her through the double doors to the veranda.

The blast of cool evening air did nothing to dampen the heat that was racing through her veins. What was wrong with her? It was like she had never spoken to a man. Certainly not a man like Will. She already thought of him as Will and not the more formal Mr. Dixon.

The stars sparkled in the sky and the crickets chirped in the distance, and Mary Alice was completely aware of the man standing beside her. They had just been introduced, yet he was unlike any other man she had ever met. He was tall, and slight, but not a milquetoast in the way that other pampered, city men were. He was respectful, he smelled good, and he was well mannered. His clothes however were awful. They were far too big and hung on him like an old potato sack. With just a tuck here and there, he would be quite handsome. An odd surge of jealousy surged through Mary Alice. She didn’t want any other woman to think him handsome.

“It’s quite a beautiful night tonight,” Will commented.

“Yes, it is. Spring is a wonderful time of year.”

Mary Alice didn’t want to mix business with pleasure with Will but, uncharacteristically, her mind had run out of things to say. She was used to making small talk while her clients stood in front of her getting fitted for their garments.

“I understand you intend to provide loans to some of the smaller ranchers and farmers,” Mary Alice said, gambling that he would not be shocked by her interest in things that were traditionally not discussed by women.

Will looked at her, one eyebrow raised. Mary Alice’s stomach fluttered.

“Good news travels fast,” Mary Alice added, to hide what he surely thought was gossip.

“Yes, I do. Banks should not be just for those who have money. Banks are the lifeblood of a community. Sometimes all it takes is just a little help for a businessman or a rancher to become successful.”

“Or a seamstress.” Mary Alice held in a gasp. She had no idea she was going to say that, and she chastised herself. Her boldness might have just cost her any chance she had of getting her sewing machine.

Her heart raced as Will studied her for a long time. Finally he smiled and said, “Or a seamstress.”

Mary Alice hid her reaction. It was too soon to rejoice.
