Chapter 15

Dante stepped out into the bright sunlight and onto the curb. He covered his eyes from the glare, wishing for the usual dreary London fog. A coach rolled to a stop in front of him and he stared into the back seat. It was empty. Sweat rolled off his brow and he began to shake. Unable to move from where he stood, he looked up to the footman. For a split second, he saw Mr. Smith's face instead of the man who was actually there. With a jolt of confusion, he backed away from the coach and began walking toward town instead.

“Lord Heller? Are you all right?” the footman called, jumping down from the seat.

Dante jumped away from him, holding out his hands to keep distance. “Yes. I would just rather walk is all. It's uh…a beautiful day. I shouldn't waste it in a coach.” He couldn't admit the idea of getting into another carriage scared the hell out of him. The footman inched closer. “No, really. It’s fine.” Dante pulled his hat down to cover his eyes and walked faster away from the man.

A few blocks away, another coach slowed down and rolled to his walking pace. Dante glanced to the side to see Delilah staring out the window. “Get in the coach, Dante.”

He shook his head. Not even she could convince him. “Dante Heller. Get in please. You can't just walk to Scotland Yard. It's too far.”

He stopped and stared at her. The carriage rolled to a stop and he approached it. “Delilah. I don't plan to ride for quite some time. Please understand.”

“Very well,” she said, and stepped out. She motioned to the footman who handed her a parasol. With a wink, she flicked her thumb and the parasol opened. “I shall walk with you, then.” She beamed and began walking. He groaned and followed.

They walked in silence for a while. Dante stole glances behind him to see the coach rolling along. “Why are you going with me?”

“Because you can't go alone. Just as I can't go alone.”

“You make no sense.”

“Scotland Yard doesn’t believe we were together that night. If I go, we can clear this up at the same time. It's perfectly reasonable to me.”

“Fine.” He conceded. There wasn't much point in arguing. She had a good point. After a few blocks, his back began to burn, and his pace slowed. He played as if he was more interested in the scenery though, He didn't want her to think he was in pain. He stopped completely at one point, ‘to stretch’ he said, and picked a flower to hand to Delilah. She smiled, a tense, unconvinced line across her face. Her eyes narrowed and he hoped she wasn't noticing the sweat beading on his forehead again. He was sick to his stomach with the pain in his back where the nailed billyclub landed, and at this point and he felt like jumping into the flower bushes just to vomit.

She motioned to a bench instead of calling his bluff.
