PREGNANCY: TIME TO PREPARE

You have 9 months to prepare, so let’s get started!

Do not spend your time cuddling and coddling your dog. That will just make the changes even harder.

Do you need to do some training with your dog? If so, sign up for a class. Talk to the trainer about which behaviors should receive the most attention (usually leave it, drop it, sit, and go to bed).

Please don’t put this off. By the end of your pregnancy, you may be uncomfortable and not interested in attending a training class. Also, behaviors that have been practiced over time are much stronger than newly mastered skills. Your dog will be happier if he knows what you want him to do.

Will there be changes to your dog’s routine? Start making those now. Put his bed where you will want it to be when the baby arrives. Start using baby gates from time to time to block him in and out of rooms. Change his walking and exercise patterns so that he doesn’t expect the same routine each day. Dogs are creatures of habit; he’ll need to learn to roll with the changes.

If you are concerned, ask a trainer to assess your dog for safety around children.
