Chapter Twenty-Seven

Wolfe was trying to tell me the criminal I was chasing wasn’t finished. I still wasn’t clear on the motive behind the murders yet. When and where our murderess would strike next was anyone’s guess. And the fact I still didn’t know much about the woman I was hunting had spiked my anxiety.

After Foley and I went our separate ways, I checked in with Simone. Foley was sending an officer or two to keep an eye on Alli’s house, something he and I both agreed should have happened the night Greer died. In the meantime, Simone had kept herself busy by searching the internet for information related to the case and by making some calls.

Simone told me Wolfe’s sister Christine lived nearby in Harmony. I didn’t know what purpose visiting her would serve other than helping me to profile the killer better. Which was, of course, a damn good purpose to have. I put it on my do-it-pronto list.

Simone had also spoken to a few of the guests at Pippa’s cocktail party. Donovan Grant, one of Pippa’s costars, told Simone about a housekeeper Pippa had fired before her death. The housekeeper, Adriana Simpson, lost her job after some cash went missing from Pippa’s nightstand drawer. Pippa had shown up on set the following day distraught over the whole ordeal, and she told Grant all about it. It was a conversation he’d already had with Foley, which meant Foley would have already spoken with Adriana.

Now it was my turn.

Squeaky Clean Maids was located inside of a house that served a dual purpose—it was both a residence and a business. The business was on the main floor, and the living quarters on the second. I parked next to a van that had a custom vehicle wrap depicting a bath scene, complete with bubbles and a large rubber duck along with the name and contact information about the maid service.

I made my way inside and found a cheery woman with long, wavy, red hair whistling as she vacuumed the carpet. She was dressed in a pair of black skinny jeans and a red and white polka-dot, button-up blouse tied in a knot at the waist. She saw me and jumped forward, pressing a hand to her chest like I’d startled her.

She switched the vacuum off, placed a hand on her hip, and said, “Oh my goodness. Sorry. I didn’t see you there. I hope you haven’t been waiting long.”

“It’s no problem. I just walked in.”

“What can I do for you?”

“I’m looking for Adriana Simpson.”

She pointed at herself and smiled. “Then you’re looking for me.”

I offered my name and explained why I was there. She seemed unfazed and suggested we move to her office where we could both have a seat while we chatted.

“How long have you worked here?” I asked.

“I own the business with my sister. We opened a couple of years ago. Been doing well so far.”

“Do you live here too? Upstairs, I mean? When I drove up, I noticed what I thought might be the living area through the window.
