CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Teddy

THIS HALLWAY SMELLS of desperation. The fertility research clinic lives deep inside the women’s hospital where most Pittsburghers go to have their babies. You know, just to make it a little bit more painful to enter the damn building. I walked past a woman obviously in labor on the way in here and because nothing is labeled, I had to circle the first floor twice.

I’ll be damned if I stop and ask for directions to the fertility clinic. Why not just wear a sign around my neck. Here goes Teddy Preston: No Viable Sperm.

I wanted to wear a ball cap pulled down low, but since I’m here on my lunch break, decked out in a suit, I decided the hat would draw even more attention. I should have considered a fedora…that would have looked slick with my suit.

I’m not sure what made me email the clinic about finally scheduling a follow-up appointment. Something about that damn mushroom log, watching Chloe’s face as she diligently built a humidity tent to help the mycelium along when they didn’t sprout from water alone.

Something about her saying the mushrooms just needed a little more help. That same afternoon, she texted me a picture of a tiny little growth. A light brown tube growing out of the log, right near the top of the grape bag tent. So I dug out my email and messaged the clinic.

After I stupidly went and got us a stupid dog I now have to drive to daycare on my way to work.
