AS MY FAMILY WAS GROWING, SO WAS MY CAREER. I formed my own production company, Bryna (named after my mother), and one of the first projects I developed was based on a bestselling book—Spartacus.

Spartacus was made during the McCarthy Era. Senator Joe McCarthy accused Hollywood writers, directors, and actors of being Communists. Those who were accused were put on the “blacklist”; most lost their careers and some lost their lives. It was a terrible time in Hollywood. I helped to break the blacklist by giving screenwriting credit to my friend, the brilliant writer Dalton Trumbo, a blacklisted writer. I think the drama of getting Trumbo’s name on the script was more dramatic than the movie itself.

The lines from my movies don’t usually stay with me. There is, however, one beautiful bit of dialogue from Spartacus that I can still recite after fifty years. Trumbo wrote these lines for the love scene between Jean Simmons and me:
