Dear Juniper,

Today was the most embarrassing day of my life. You'll never believe what happened here.

Karl and Mr. Fisher came by today as usual. They brought the lawyer with them. His name is Mr. Jameson. He's from Spokane. So he's not a potato head from Boise. I don't know whether it made any difference to Daddy or not.

He seemed nice enough and he wasn't all dressed up in a suit. Which is a good thing, because Daddy always says he doesn't trust a man just because he's dressed in a suit. Luckily for Mr. Jameson he wore a big old wool sweater and slacks instead. And he had large, intelligent eyes behind his glasses.

Right off the bat Daddy told him, "Let's get one thing straight. You will honor my family's right to privacy. I expect you'll see to it there's no TV people up here sticking cameras in our faces."

Mr. Jameson: "Hm. Yes. I understand."

The grown-ups all sat down around the kitchen table drinking coffee. Karl sat right down there with them like a big shot Nazi.

Shelly had made fresh banana bread this morning. So I hung close by in the kitchen slicing and serving it. What a big mistake! The conversation ended with me right in the middle of it. And yes, Shelly put raisins instead of nuts in her dumb banana bread.

Anyway Mr. Jameson took out a thick file folder and yellow pad, then started right in. "I've spent considerable time on this case already. So we have quite a few things to go over. First of all there's this matter of a letter sent to the FBI from your family."

"That's right. I wrote the letter on everyone's behalf," Shelly said, handing him a copy. "This is it right here."

After he finished reading it he said, "Hm. I see. Well. I'm here to tell you they didn't appreciate your effort at all, Mrs. Smith. In fact they consider this letter to be quite inflammatory. They interpreted it as a veiled threat."

Daddy: "Threat of what?"

Mr. Jameson: "Hm. Well. You see, if someone wanted to, they could interpret these words as a threat of violence against the government."

Daddy: "We'll fight to defend our home and property. That much is true."

Mr. Jameson cleared his throat. "While I respect your right to feel the way you do, as your attorney, I must insist from now on all communication between you and the FBI be handled through my office. Please."

Daddy: "A man has the right to say what he thinks."

Mr. Jameson: "Like I said, Mr. Smith, I respect that. The problem here is the government can use a letter like this against you. They can take phrases out of context to make your words seem more dangerous. For instance they could combine two lines into, 'We the family of Dalton Smith will die. We will not obey.' They could make it sound like you pose a threat to your own family's welfare."

Daddy nodded. "I see what you mean. After reading that newspaper story, I can already see how they twist things around.
