Chapter 10

Shannon spent the following day attending to last-minute preparations for the wedding. As the Navy team continued sweeping through the island properties, they set up monitoring devices and camera surveillance that could be maintained and operated off the island, a highly sophisticated system that Marco had found for him and agreed to update and monitor for as long as the sultan desired.

The sultan had recovered remarkably well. Most of the laughter and happiness of the household was gone, however. Everyone was keenly aware of the impact the sultan’s health had on the family. And Shannon realized for the first time that he really was the hub where all the spokes of the wheel joined. And he was not going to be able to quickly transfer that to anyone else. Even his sons were not trained to take over running a kingdom.

It was the one thing Shannon felt the sultan had ignored, and now that he was faced with an impending end, there wasn’t the time to really fix it. So the household was filled with sadness and thoughts of the inevitable demise of the great man. She knew her future husband, even though he would do anything for the sultan, also was incapable of truly fixing this. There was nothing to be done now.

She spoke to Marco privately when they were alone. They were planning to leave the following day.

“Has he given any thought to what will happen once he goes? I mean, who will keep this household, who will run it?” she asked.

“I’ve tried to talk to him about it, Shannon. He refuses to discuss it. I know he doesn’t want to send everybody into chaos, but I’m afraid he’s resigned himself to someone else solving it for him. And as close as I am to him, even I can’t do it. He’s not going to give the power to either one of his sons or his wives, especially now.”

“So what’ll happen with Meera and her wanna-be lover?” Shannon asked.

“He’s facing many, many years in prison. Perhaps some kind of clemency would be granted after the sultan’s death, but there’s no guarantee on that. The government of India, who is responsible for certain security matters of the kingdom, since it’s within its sphere, really doesn’t have the capacity to handle it. I’m guessing there are politicians in India who have their sights on the island someday. This whole way of life that we’re witnessing is probably also going to fade, just like he will.”

“Then I’m glad he will die before he has to see all that happen,” she said.

“These are the stories of all the great maharajas and islands that are in the Indian Ocean as, one by one, they became hotels or luxury resorts, places where the rich and famous could rent a castle, a villa, or a palace for themselves and their entourage. There will always be people who want that. But the number of people who are in this world able to afford maintaining it and keeping it, that number’s dwindling.
