This chapter was possibly my favorite to write in this book, not because it has more or less value than any other, but because I love thinking about the concept of teamwork and how great leaders foster it. For much of my younger career, the concept of teamwork was difficult for me to grasp, even with my background in sports. Teamwork in sports made sense but only mid-career did I begin to see the parallel of it in the workplace. As obvious as it sounds, the reality is we are programmed as adults to begin thinking of our own self-interest and the notion of teamwork becomes a distant thought. Consequently, it’s an area of leadership that is easy to overlook and misinterpret the meaning of when we get too ahead of ourselves and our growth. For years, I was guilty of wanting to own all aspects of a project – to control the outcome, earn recognition, and I’m sure for several other reasons - and struggled to “relinquish control,” especially in areas where I knew I could perform. As a marketing professional, I am dynamic because of my diverse background and typically can jump into each function within the marketing umbrella as needed, which has made it difficult for me to know when to handover work and step away. As I’ve matured, however, the concept of “we” evolved in its meaning and I came to understand the value of leading teams whose unique strengths and weaknesses—when integrated—worked well together. The greatest illustration for integrated teamwork I have come across has been that of a soccer team.
