Mack had thrown that word at her like a challenge. And Wynona didn’t shy away from a challenge. Or she wouldn’t have gone back to college, got her criminal justice degree and entered the police academy. But she had.

And she knew she had to answer this challenge, too. She just took a moment to compose herself and to get dressed. And when she came out of the bathroom, she told him what she suspected he already knew. “I was seeing Jason Cruise.”

“When he was trying to kill Charlie Tillerman?” Mack asked.

Clearly he knew everything since he didn’t seem a bit surprised—just cautious and maybe disappointed with a slight bowing to his broad shoulders. He’d pulled on his jeans while she’d showered, but he wasn’t wearing a shirt, which just wasn’t fair. He made it harder for her to focus.

She shook her head. “No. I only went out with him a few times after he helped me find my house. He was probably only interested in me because of that...” Because of her money. Too many men and so-called friends had been only interested in that when she was growing up, so she’d trusted few people as friends and especially as potential partners. “And I realized quickly that he was a narcissist. But before I did, when he was trying so hard to woo me, I know I told him too much about my job, about things that had been happening on my job.”

“The things that had happened to the hotshots?”

She nodded. “I know it was unprofessional and stupid. And I know Michaela Momber already thinks I was taking bribes or something from him. If they saw my house and knew that I’d been going out with him...”

“Most people don’t know you were personally involved with him,” Mack said. But clearly he had. “Most people question how close you were to Martin Gingrich.”

She grimaced. “That makes me sick to think anyone believes I could have been personally involved with him. He was assigned as my training officer. I had no control over that. Just as I have no control over people thinking whatever they will about me.” She drew in a deep breath and let it out in a sigh. “And I guess I shouldn’t care what these people think of me. I should just want to do my job.”

But she cared. Ever since her parents had died she felt so alone, and she’d wanted to make connections here in the town she’d chosen for herself. She’d wanted to make a life here, not just professionally but personally as well.

“I talked to Martin Gingrich,” he said. “I visited him in jail.”

Gingrich was still awaiting trial, still trying to push it off as long as he could. Wynona almost felt sorry for him. “Did he know about Jason?” Was that who had told Mack?

“Not that he was dead, but he knew you were going out with him,” he said. “But I already knew before I talked to ole Marty.” He pulled out a magnet and a card.
