CHAPTER SIXTEEN
"Hello, friend!" Jax said, sauntering across the catwalk and slumping down beside Aart.
"Hey," Aart said. He'd already been watching the warehouse for hours but no one had come in or gone out. He'd spent the last week trying to get information out of Jax and so far he'd come up with nothing. All he knew was that sometimes people or cars came to the warehouse, but never on any kind of schedule. It had cost Mal three shots of Joy so far and had resulted in nothing. Aart's stomach twisted and he found it hard to keep up conversation with Jax, who's mind circled between Joy and clouded memories which might or might not be true.
"Ooo, lookie here," Jax said, crawling closer to the edge and peering out over the side of the grating.
Aart followed, his stomach lurching as he peered down at the hard cement. A nondescript white van turned into the alley and backed toward the roller-doors which screeched as they opened. Two men stepped onto the loading dock from inside.
"Bout time they showed up!" said one. "The bastards are late."
"They're always late."
The van stopped and two men got out, went to the back, and opened the door.
"Got your delivery," said the driver.
"You're late!" bellowed the first man on the loading bay.
"Tell someone who cares."
The driver and his passenger unloaded four cardboard boxes with labels plastered across them: Warning. Poisonous.
"Did you at least get the order right this time?" said the red-faced man beside the rolling door.
"Hey, I just deliver what I'm told," the driver said, pulling a digital screen from his back pocket and tapping it twice. "A hundred vials of Joy, twenty of Confidence, and ten each of Excitement, Hope, Hate, and Fear."
"Good. Don't be late next time."
The driver flicked his hand at the man, slammed the van door shut, and climbed back into his seat, his passenger doing the same. Seconds later, they pulled away with a screech of tires.
"Bastards," said the man by the door.
The other one rolled his eyes and lifted one of the boxes, carrying it inside. Two more trips saw all the boxes inside and the doors screeching closed.
"Did you see all that Joy?" Jax said, eyes wide. "Can you imagine having that?"
Aart nodded, only half listening. Joy and Hope. What if some of those vials contained his Joy, his Hope? It was right there in the warehouse below, ready to be sold to the highest bidder.
The thought made his stomach roll. It wasn't right. Those emotions belonged to him.
"Are you okay?" Jax said, laying a hand on Aart's shoulder. "I know it's a lot to take in. I nearly fell off the walk the first time I saw a delivery!"
Aart blinked and forced himself back to the present. He had to concentrate. "How often do they make those deliveries?"
Jax frowned and rubbed his chin. "It's not regular like. Maybe once every couple of weeks? But that's just the ones I see. I'm not here all the time, not at night.
