CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Atticus felt like he was starting to get overwhelmed as he made his approach back to his and Colleen’s place.

But, for once, it was a good kind of overwhelmed. It was kind of like having too many problems that you wanted to tackle.

Well, time to prioritize.

He walked in through the front door and found Colleen in the exact same place he’d left her. She looked worried, anxious, and hopeful all at the same time.

“I have decided that I want this,” he said, and the relief he saw on her face was huge and wonderful. “I thought about it, I mean I really thought about it, and I also got the opinion of a literal genius on it. And she agreed with my assessment.”

For a moment, Colleen looked utterly lost. Then she hazarded: “Vetra?”

He grinned awkwardly as he sat down next to her. “Yes. I ran into her completely at random in the woods. And she...asked what was on my mind. And you said you don’t mind if other people know, and we’re already cool with trying to introduce her into our little...pool.”

Colleen snorted. “Pool?”

“My brain is kind of hopping here, there, and everywhere right now.”

She laughed. “I get that. And it’s fine, I’m not upset. What’d she say? What was she doing?”

“Nothing beyond hanging around out there. She scared me, and I guess I scared her, I didn’t realize she was there. But she said that I should do it, because it would make me happy, and that’s ultimately the thing worth pursuing, besides making other people happy...which this would also do.” He paused, then grinned awkwardly.

“...okay, what else is there?” Colleen asked. “Because obviously there’s more.”

He chuckled. “Um...I might have propositioned her for sex.”

Her eyes opened wide. “Atticus.”

“I mean, you know…” He trailed off, unsure of how to actually finish that sentence.

“Well? And?” she pressed.

“She said yes. With some asterisks attached.”

“What asterisks?”

“She needs blood tests from us all to prove we’re STI free. And also a quality date.”

“Very reasonable,” she murmured. “Hmm. I suppose it would be prudent to get tested again, given it’s so easy now.”

“Is it easy?” he asked.

“Yes. Also especially for us. Edith has access to a lab and is friends with one of the techs who works there. The place is in Westfield, it’s a combination blood drawing center and a chemical lab where they can run all kinds of tests. It’ll be about three hundred a pop, but I can cover that fine. You think you can talk Kate into it?”

“Definitely. Also, did I mention-fuck, too much is happening. Kate is going to let me destroy her ass soon.”

Colleen burst out laughing. “What?”

“She offered up sexual favors in exchange for helping clean up that absolutely wrecked lakehouse and when I realized she was serious, I asked for anal.”

She chuckled. “Hopefully I can watch, that sounds hot. Also we never came back to that topic ourselves…”

“Yeah...so, uh, you want to-goddamnit,” he whispered.
