EVE

I cover my mouth with my free hand as Lief and I stroll into the wedding venue created in the meadow behind the bride and groom’s home. Tonight is Kit and Arlo’s rehearsal dinner. Though, from the sound of the guest list, it seems more like a pre-wedding since just about all of the guests are invited.

Including my mother and me. Speaking of her, I wonder where she’s lurking. I’m sure she’s desperate for an update. Once we were back in cell phone range, I had close to two dozen texts and voicemails from her wanting the scoop.

I suppose I should cut her some slack. As much as I hate to admit it, she was right. Lief is one hell of a catch. And we get along well. I cast a sidelong glance at him, and my heart hitches. Crazy as it sounds, I’m going to miss him when this is all over.

I yawn again, earning a grin from Lief.

“Tired?” He gives my other hand—the one he’s holding tightly—a gentle squeeze.

“Very.” I lean into his arm. A thrill flutters through me as his muscle flexes against me. “Someone kept me up talking all night.”

“Psh.” He rolls his eyes and gives me a good-natured nudge. “You were the one who wanted to talk all night.” He raises his voice an octave. “‘Look at that bird. Look at that plant.’”

“Hey.” I nudge him back. “I don’t talk like that.”

“No, of course not.” He leans forward to brush his lips over my temple, and my belly clenches. “Your voice is much sweeter.”

“Well.” I don’t know about that, but my cheeks flush all the same. “You’ll have to excuse me if I’m a little enthusiastic. I spend most of my life in a windowless office. Here, there’s nothing but beauty to see.”

“Never apologize for taking wonder in my backyard.'' He raises our linked hands to his lips to kiss the backs of my knuckles. My heart flutters the same way it does every time he does it. “I like to impress you anyway I can.”

There’s a flash of heat in those clear eyes of his that promises I’d find everything about him impressive. I have no doubt. The sample I’ve had in the form of his kiss will be enough to keep me hot—and bothered—through the long, dull nights ahead of me.

It would be so easy—and thoroughly satisfying—to take Lief as my lover.

It would also be wrong.

There’s no way I can let that happen. It would be better not to think about it.

I shift the subject back to one of the sights we saw last night, to change my train of thought.

“The way that eagle looked as it swooped over the valley, and . . .” I trail off as I catch something in Lief’s gaze changes. It’s something softer. Something so basic, I can’t quite place what it is.

But while I’ve been sitting here rambling on and on, recapping something he’s seen hundreds of times, he’s listened to my every word like I’m telling him the secrets of the universe.
