“Do you have the documents for the new customers with the special terms?” Sabrina’s colleague stopped in her doorway and cast a questioning glance at Sabrina, who sat at her desk.

“Do we have any customers with normal terms?” asked Sabrina with a sigh.

Her colleague laughed softly. “As long as our boss is our boss, probably not.”

Sabrina stood up. “I just printed them,” she said, going over to the printer and taking out the pages. “Here.” She handed them to her colleague. “But he still has to sign them.”

“Of course.” Her coworker shook her head. “And then there’ll be a thousand more changes.”

“Whatever,” said Sabrina. She went back to her desk. The telephone rang. Sabrina reached for it and answered while the other hand moused around the computer screen looking for a file. The mouse pointer froze. “How can you –?” whispered Sabrina. She glanced at her colleague, still standing in the doorway and flipping through the documents, making sure everything was in order. “No, we no longer carry that product,” she said and hung up.

Her colleague raised the stack of papers. “Looks like everything’s here. I’ll take it to him.”

Sabrina nodded. Her throat felt constricted. The telephone rang again. She had to answer it; that was her job, and it might be a client. Hesitantly, she picked up the receiver.

“That’s too bad,” said Anna. “Because I really would like to have ordered one.”

“How dare you call me here?” whispered Sabrina. “In the middle of my workday.”

“Where else am I supposed to reach you?”

Sabrina laid her forehead on her hand. “This can’t go on, Anna,” she said quietly. “It just can’t. You have to stop.”

“But I don’t want to,” said Anna.

“What about your promise? I kept my end of the bargain.” Sabrina sat up indignantly.

Anna laughed softly. “I don’t think so.”

“So you’re not going to abide by our agreement?” Sabrina asked.

“I am,” Anna replied. “I didn’t order any roses today. Although I would really have loved to send some to your office today. After last night . . .”

Sabrina shut her eyes briefly. She had to face the facts. “Forget last night. Nothing happened.”

“Quite a lot happened. Although you did leave me standing there in the middle of it.” Anna laughed softly. “Or sitting, rather.”

“What were you expecting?” whispered Sabrina. Her office door stood open; someone could come in at any time. “That I would just –? I told you, I don’t do that sort of thing.”

“But you started to.” Anna’s darkly erotic voice purred through the receiver. “I could feel how turned on you were,” she murmured. “Only that silly ring on your finger held you back. I bet it won’t next time.”

“There isn’t going to be a next time,” said Sabrina, and hung up.

A moment later, the phone rang again.

Sabrina seized the receiver. “Leave me alone!” she snarled.

“Sabsi? What’s wrong?”

Sabrina felt her heart skip a beat. “Chris,” she whispered. She felt relief, and at the same time, her guilty conscience gnawing at her.

“I . . . I’m sorry that we didn’t see each other at all last night,” Chris apologized.
