Technique 2: Breath of Fire (or Agni-Prasana)

The breath of fire is very different to long deep breathing; as with this exercise, you learn to expel air very forcefully through your abdominal contractions. It is taught as an advanced skill to purify and cleanse the subtle body, and it a quick way to energize yourself.

Start by performing the long deep breathing, feel it naturally flow into you, and expand your diaphragm.

After a few moments of this, gradually shift your awareness to the outward breath. You will notice that there is a pressure that the breath feels to expel itself out of the body and an immediate need to fill the lungs once more once empty.

Gently, and still in a meditative frame of mind, take your hands and place them on your abdomen and feel the rise and fall of your breath.

On your next outward breath, apply a little pressure to the breath from your abdomen, contracting as you exhale. You will notice that the breath empties much faster and forcefully.

Allow the inward breath to immediately refill as per normal.

On the next outward breath, again contract with the abdomen to speed the exhale.

This process should continue until you start to feel a bellows - like rhythm take over. Eventually, your outward breath should naturally become forceful that it makes a semipowerful ‘Huh!’ sound all of its own.

Try not to ‘control’ or direct this outward breath, but do so through the abdominal contractions.

Maintain this breath of fire for a few minutes.
