7 babysitters & nannies
Diane smiled at Carla with relief. It wasnât just that sheâd finally found a babysitter she liked, but also that Carla could start so soon. The attractive young woman had extensive experience with children, had been a house sitter for some people whom Diane had once met, and best of all, she had lots of references. The following night, Diane and her husband Bomani drove away from their house with hardly a worryâten-month-old Bomani, Jr., was in good hands.
Busy hands, too, for they spent a considerable amount of time going through Dianeâs closets and drawers, though that wouldnât be apparent for several months. By that point, Diane had trusted Carla a lotâwith Bomani, Jr., with the house, even with personal thoughts and feelings.
The job of a dishonest babysitter gets much easier as time goes on because once confidence has been invested, a family doesnât want to entertain the little feelings of doubt that Kori might send them. This isnât just because of the inconvenience of replacing someone, but also because we may have to admit being wrong. And as much as we like to say, âI didnât have a clue,â thatâs rarely so.
Hereâs what happened, according to Diane:
Some weeks after Carla started babysitting for Diane and Bomani, she was going to take Bomani, Jr., out for the afternoon. As they were leaving, Diane got a call canceling a meeting, so she had some extra time and decided to go with Carla and her son for a while.
When they arrived at the park, an unsavory-looking young man approached their car; he and Carla apparently knew each other well, and Diane figured he may have been waiting for her. When he asked how she was doing, Carla replied, âStaying out of trouble.â
Diane didnât think much about it at the timeâthough she obviously thought enough about it to register and remember itâbut later, what Carla said made Diane uncomfortable. Though she didnât introduce Diane to him, Carla told Diane later that the guy was her boyfriend.
A few other things started happening, like Diane and Bomani would get lots of hang-ups whenever Carla was at their house, but they didnât get hang-ups when she wasnât there.
Then Dianeâs watch went missing.
One night, when Bomani and Diane went to the movies, she called the house to check on Bomani, Jr., and a man answered the phone. When she asked for Carla, the man hung up. She called again and Carla answered, so Diane just assumed she had dialed the wrong number the first time. She discounted each new thing that happened and was never willing to see what it all added up toâuntil that last night when it was obvious.
Theyâd gone to a friendâs birthday party and left Bomani, Jr., with Carla. When they arrived at their friendâs house about a half-hour later, Diane realized sheâd left the gift on the floor right near their front door. She wanted to go back and get it but Bomani said theyâd bring it over some other time.
