ACUPUNCTURE

Principles and Characteristics

To properly understand acupuncture, familiarity with its principles of meridians and acupuncture points is needed. Within the body is an energy-flow system that regulates organ function from the head to the feet, and laterally from the chest area to the arms. These channels, along which energy flows through the body, are known as meridians. Acupuncture points are specified areas for stimulation, and 365 such points are located all over the body. When a person becomes ill and regular energy flow along the meridians is interrupted, acupuncture can remedy an illness or restore physical condition back to normal.

In Korean acupuncture, needles made from refined metals such as gold, silver, and platinum are inserted into the skin to stimulate internal tissue, or can be placed on the skin for surface stimulation. Based on an overall examination and diagnosis, the physician will insert needles into the patient’s acupuncture points that are considered conducive to treating a particular ailment. During the insertion, the patient will assume various positions including lying on his or her back, front or side, or sitting in a chair, either upright, leaning to one side, or facing forward with both hands under the chin.
