“That was intense,” I say, falling back onto the bed.

“Mum and Dad were chuffed.”

“I’m not sure what ‘chuffed’ means, but yes, they seemed to be pretty happy about the news. It’s kind of scary to me.”

“How’s that?”

“I don’t know. It’s like...they are pinning all their hopes and dreams on this little baby inside of me. It’s a lot to live up to.”

Finley waves a hand at me. His tie is already undone, but still hanging over his shoulders as he undoes the buttons on his shirt one by one. “Don’t worry about that, Love. My parents are crazy about you. They’re glad that there’s a woman who has finally tamed the beast.”

“I haven’t tamed you.”

“Oh? You got me all gunning to settle down, to—”

“You’re still a wild beast with Logan.”

Finley snorts and pulls off his shirt. Despite myself, my eyes move all along his body and rippling muscles, drinking in the sight of him. I force my eyes back to his face. “Seriously, Finley, you don’t need to rub it in to him like that. I want people to be happy about our baby, not going into some murderous rage.”

“What? You’re defending him? Do you know what he...you shouldn’t defend him. You don’t have to worry or think about him.”

“I do have to worry. Your Dad said he’d come around. He won’t come around if we treat him like human garbage. If you turn good news into a weapon against him.”

“Now that’s a bit melodramatic, isn’t it?”

“The way you’re acting is melodramatic, Finley. You’re creating needless drama and conflict!” I stand up and get as close to Finley as I can. He’s a good foot taller than me, so I can’t look him eye-to-eye without tilting my head up. Still, I meet his eyes and make sure he knows I’m dead serious “I want you to try to get along with him.”

“Oh, come now, Love, he’s impossible.”

“I’ll admit he seems like a bit of a dick, but what do you expect him to do if you all treat him the way you do?”

Finley tries to hug me, but I push him away. “Promise me you’ll make an effort.”

“An effort? For how long?”

“Not some half-assed token effort. I want you to really try to fix things with him. Your parents are wonderful to me, but I don’t know how I’m going to deal with this Logan thing if you can’t get it to be better. You told me that you were worried your family would scare me away, and it’s not exactly Logan who is close to scaring me away, it’s the way you’re treating him that is scaring me.”

“I don’t think you understand the full depth of our dynamic.”

“I’m sure I don’t, Finley, but it’s not a good dynamic. It’s toxic, and it’s going to take some serious work to fix it.” I do hug him now. I bury my face in his chest, and then I look up at him, my expression softening for him. I’m not trying to make him feel worse or be a bitch, but I really want to fix this.
