Whoever it was is long gone by the time I come back around to the front entrance of The Nook. The way he (and Iâm pretty sure it was a he) was sneaking around, makes me think about Philâs suspicious phone call.
The familiar fragrances of coffee, pastries and sugar all assault my senses as I step through the front door to a nearly empty storefront. Linnie is seated on a stool staring at his phone screen. All the cases and cups are well-stocked, and the space is immaculate. Brigid and a woman I donât recognize are in the back booth. A familiar place for pow-wows with lawyers. She waves at me and stands up to greet me before I can walk over to her.
âHey Brig. Did you close early, orâ¦?â I let the question trail off as she looks over my shoulder at the rest of the space, noticing itâs emptiness.
âAch. No. I suppose Iâm seeing just what living in a small town will do for business if I canât get this target off my back. Never mind events. Iâll be lucky to keep the doors open another week if this is what I have to look forward to.â
Brigidâs resignation to her new life as a failed business owner makes me sad, and I rest my hand on her shoulder. âDonât worry, Brig, weâll figure it out before then. Iâm on the case, so itâll probably be solved by tomorrow.â
âWell, you and Phil are on the case.â
I roll my eyes sarcastically. âRight, sure. Your lawyer might help, too.â I look over at the pastry case and smile. âPlus, in the meantime, you get to eat all the sweet treats. Could I get one of the pumpkin muffins?â
Sighing, Brigid looks over at Linnie with a slight smile. He looks up from his phone with his head but not his eyes. His eyes are still trained on whatever heâs playing, which looks to be a version of snake. âLinnie, could you get Jessica a pumpkin muffin? Donât ring her up.â
Linnie puts his finger in the air, nodding, and mutters from his half-comatose state as a game zombie, âHang on.â
Brigid says to me, âJust go back and get it yourself.â
I walk around the counter and pick up a piece of bakery tissue to reach for the sweet myself, picking out the exact one I was looking at. Itâs a little misshapen, almost too round, and falling down from the weight of the cream cheese frosting inside. Itâs just like me. A little rough around the edges but worth it once you get to the inside. For a second, I almost donât want to bite into it, Iâve identified so strongly with it. Almost. With a most deliciously moist, creamy bite in my mouth, I close my eyes for a second to savor it before asking Brigid, âSpeaking of Phil, is that her?â
âYes, thatâs her. Would you like to finish your moment with the muffin before coming to speak with her?â she asks, looking pointedly at my upper lip.
