âYou think he bought it?â I asked Auberon. We sat in the back of the boat, while Mr Wogan had gone below deck to check the fuel levels on the engine. Judging by the colour of his eyes, I suspected it was just an excuse to refill his own tank. âMind you, with those eyes, I think heâs rather smashed. He might not even remember half of what you told him.â
âWhich is good,â Auberon said, sipping from the carved wooden cup Mr Wogan had lent him. âI mean, who in their right mind would accept being flown by helicopter to a remote island off the coast of Wales?â
âUs, apparently.â I forced down another swig of coffee from my cup, a ceramic thing with a half-naked lady on the side. âI meant to ask. Why did you run back to the cave?â
âI didnât think we could hitch a ride carrying our swords. I hid them behind some rocks. Donât worry, I know where they are.â
âIf I never see that blade again, itâs perfectly fine by me. I killed a man with it.â For some reason, the shiver I expected to run down my spine at the thought of killing Percival didnât come. I was empty, completely numb. Puzzled by my lack of emotion, I handed the small plastic box to Auberon. âAnother biscuit?â
He held his hand up. âNo, thank you. I was hungry, but those must have been made from a bricklayerâs recipe. The one I managed to get down has formed a concrete lining in my stomach. But what did you mean about the fishermanâs eyes?â
âJust look closer when he gets back up. Thereâs something very wrong with the whites. To me, he looks hammered.â
Captain Wogan returned outside and proceeded to steer the boat, leaving Auberon and me alone in the back. That suited me perfectly, as my brain was swamped with a million questions yearning for answers. At the same time, I was exhausted. I leaned back on the railing and looked up at the clear, blue sky. My fingers went for my ring, when I remembered it was gone. I wanted to ask Auberon about what he had done to it, but I was so tired I couldnât form the words. He must have had a good reason, though what that could be was beyond me. Being without my ring made me feel weirdly exposed, and a lump of regret settled in my stomach.
My break lasted only a couple more minutes. I might have dozed off, but was thrown back to reality when the engine slowed down.
âAre we there?â I mumbled.
âWe are here, at least,â Mr Wogan said. âI have four traps and four lines down yno.â He tilted his head to the side.
An orange buoy bobbed on the surface a few feet from the boat. Mr Wogan leaned over the railing, holding a pole with a hook on the end. As he pulled the buoy in, he pointed at my father and me. âYee might want to step aside.
