In the early afternoon of the next day, Kane and Adam made their way up the mountain in their rented four-wheel drive. They decided to find a vantage point high up before the sect gathered and left the car under a canopy of leaves. The disciples were expected once the dusk settled in. It would be a long wait in the heat on the side of the mountain. Both men were sure that at least Death would show up. It was too much of a show for him to avoid. In Martina’s mind Kane had seen the drama that was so characteristic of this kind of sect. It was way over the top. The adoration of the disciples bordered on obsession. They lived to praise their leaders. The tales of self-mutilation and sacrifice was enough to send chills down Kane’s spine. He wasn’t squeamish, but the things he plucked from her mind were extremely troubling. The fanaticism of the people convinced him that they were truly brainwashed. Adam remarked that he had seen similar obsessiveness in Azazel’s followers. History was repeating itself.
The mountainous terrain of the Monte Rajone and Monte Ripalta ranges was beautiful at this time of the year. The colours of the autumn leaves lit up the side of the hills as they hiked further up the trails. The Indian summer had dried out the region and an early autumn was the result. Their boots crunched over the dead leaves as they walked between the trees, trying to stay in the shadows as much as possible.
They had no idea whether anyone would be watching. Kane kept up a steady recognisance of the area as they made their way towards the summit. His mind probed the area looking for human thought patterns that would let them know someone was near. Up till now it had been quiet, but they remained alert.
They had no idea what they could expect. Would Death and Famine welcome them as fellow Forces? Or would they be antagonistic? It was all up in the air. Adam had a very foreboding feeling about the impending meeting. He’d shared his thoughts at breakfast.
‘It’s nothing I can put my finger on,’ he told Kane. ‘Just a feeling, but one that is strong. Combine that with my tattoo that is doing overtime and I think we’re in for a challenge.’
Kane absent-mindedly scratched at the shirt covering his tattoo. He was wearing long sleeves in this heat, not out of choice; his Ta Moko was moving erratically like Adam’s and no measure of logic could explain that to onlookers.
‘Yes,’ he answered as he picked up his cup of coffee. ‘The vibes are bad. But who knows, they might be happy to see us.’ Adam raised his eyebrow at the obvious lack of conviction that Kane portrayed. They could always hope.
