Dixie sputtered. This was the worst kind of situation to be in, when someone was angry at you and had a pretty good reason for it.

“I’m sorry,” she finally managed, glancing between Jessie and Patrice. “We weren’t trying to harass him. We just didn’t realize. We were about to leave.”

“No, I don’t think so,” said Patrice, stepping forward. “Look, we’ve been nothing but polite to you. We’ve even gone well out of our way to help you with information that would ordinarily be private. And what do you do? What do you make of all our kindness?”

“We didn’t understand,” Huxley said, a little more defensively than Dixie would have. “If he had given us any indication that he didn’t want to talk to us –”

“But you didn’t know what signals to look for!” Patrice snapped back. “Because you didn’t understand. You don’t understand anything about this family. You don’t know what it takes to live our lives! You don’t know what it demands of you!”

Jessie laid a hand on his shoulder. “Come along. We don’t need to make more of a scene than they already have.”

The quiet anger in Jessie’s voice hit Dixie harder than Patrice’s shouting. It was easy to ignore someone who screamed and overreacted. It was harder when they were simply hurt.

“Don’t leave yet,” Dixie said. “Please. I need to explain.”

“Is it why you broke up a funeral to harass an old man who doesn’t understand things the way he used to?” said Patrice, glaring.

“No. It’s about why we’re asking questions in the first place. Why we care about this case. You’ve probably guessed we’re not estate lawyers.”

Huxley looked at her puzzled. “Dixie, what are you doing?”

“I have a feeling about this one. Just trust me.”

He was obviously nervous, but he nodded. “If you say so.”

“So you haven’t even told us the truth this whole time?” Patrice frowned at her, seemingly as confused as he was angry. “Why should we listen to anything you say? Why, we ought to report you to the police. You showed up just when Gabrielle died, didn’t you?”

“Give them a second,” said Jessie. “I want to hear what she has to say.”

Dixie sighed with relief. She hadn’t been at all confident that Jessie would be willing to listen, and she still wasn’t sure what she would say would mean anything. But she didn’t think there was any chance of solving this case with the family against them, and there was only one way she could think of to avoid that.

Honesty.

“My brother and I came to your town looking for someone who could teach him how to use magic. We travel around the country a lot, and we’ve gotten involved in a few magical situations. We’re investigating your wife’s death because we believe it involved ghosts.”

Patrice reacted as she might have predicted. “Ghosts? First you tell us you’re con artists who lied about being lawyers, and now you expect us to believe you’re fighting ghosts? What kind of idiots do you take us for?”

But Jessie wasn’t as quick to react as he was.
