Chapter 5

Her heart in her throat, Sarah stepped out the front door of the parsonage. Whitney and Mable followed closely at her heels. None of them said anything. There was only the sound of their boots on the wooden floor.

The wind had picked up and a flurry of red and orange leaves fluttered through the air. There was a coolness in the air that wasn’t there an hour ago.

It smelled like Fall. So typical for Louisiana. Sometimes the whole winter’s temperatures could pass for Fall. Summer and Fall. Hot and not so hot.

Sarah secretly dreamed of living in a climate with four seasons. She’d loved those few and far between winters that were actually cold. Warm cider while nestled in front of the fireplace, wrapped in a quilt.

Sometimes she felt like she was a misplaced southerner.

She put up a hand, shading her eyes from the morning sunshine, to get a better view of the approaching rider.

The soldier in blue sat tall and straight in his saddle. Just as Samuel would.

She bit her bottom lip in a feeble attempt to control its quivering. Her eyes misted. And her heart felt like it was going to burst out of her chest.

She forgot that she had doubts about him. She forgot that she wasn’t sure if she wanted to even see him.

Their gazes locked as he came closer.

She bounced on her heels a little before she caught herself.

The next couple of minutes after that were a blur.

Samuel was off his horse, running toward her. And she ran down the stairs toward him. The she was in his arms. He kissed the top of her head. Her cheek. Then just held her tightly to him.

Tears ran unheeded down her cheeks. “You’re really here.” Her voice came out as barely a whisper. It was all she could manage. She was so overcome with happiness, it was nearly her undoing.

“Let me look at you.” Samuel leaned back, keeping a hold on her elbows. “My God, you’re even more beautiful than I remembered.”

Sarah flushed. She couldn’t believe that she’d ever forgotten what he looked like. He was the most handsome man in the whole world.

More handsome even than any fairy tale prince she’d ever imagined.

And he was hers.

Whitney came up behind her. “Welcome home, Billy Yank,” she said.

Samuel laughed. “It’s very good to be home.”

“Have you come to your senses yet?” Whitney asked. “Or are you going to force my poor unsuspecting sister to marry the enemy?”

“Whitney, stop it,” Sarah said. “Samuel isn’t the enemy.”

Whitney looked at her sideways. “I guess you’re going to marry him then.”

“Wait,” Samuel said, grinning from ear to ear. “You’re stealing my thunder. I haven’t had the chance to ask her yet.”

“But the letters…” Sarah said.

“Not the same,” Samuel interrupted. “Anyways, there’s something I have to tell you first. Before you answer.”

A little tendril of fear slid along Sarah’s spine.

“I’m only here for a few minutes. An hour maybe. Then I have to return to my regiment.”

“Oh.” Sarah searched his eyes. What
